It has been prosposed that the UK should allow Muslims who have been married the Muslim way to be allowed to have a Muslim divorce.
England is a christian country, and at the moment all divorces are done according the their own laws. Obviously their is resistence by the church and politicians. Though I was not bought up in England, and currently only reside in the country; I am of the mind of the saying; "When in Rome, do as the Romans do..." This may sound very biased, prejudice even but the way I see it people have moved here for a better life. When you move to a country you adhere to their laws...and though this would only effect Muslims; I can't help but see that should this pass; what stops any other religion trying to impose their way of dealing with things? That is just one part of a bigger puzzle to come, what is to stop any religion from getting too involved in other aspects of such preceedings; i.e law? deal with thing the Catholic, Muslim etc. Hell, I read Machiavelli "The Prince" and he did warn about letting the church have too much influence... But, this would be my biased opiion in the fact that I have no faith; and have a dislike for all religious intentions. For a multicultural country; I just find it more of a reminder of the obvious. It highlights the fact that their are different races & beliefs living on the same piece of land. If we were to have different rules for different people; it wouldn't be very 'British'. The unity of a british citizen wouldn't exist. It would be more that Christian Brit or that Catholic Brit or that Muslim Brit. This reminds me of my own heritage; where in New Zealand we have tribes; even today it is not safe to say what tribe you are from, as there is still some hatred...the funny thing is; we are all Maori's, native to New Zealand who were conquered by the British? Moe,
I would certainly agree, a divorce should be settled in the 'English' way, according to Statutory Law/Government adherering to the country's principles/tolerance. It wouldn't be 'fair', to everyone elses religion if they can wear the niquuab, yet they cannot make a claim about there own disputes about uniform, education, food etc. It really is a coincidence that majority of 'Muslims', have to create/invent such issues about divorce. Personally i feel it is 'subtle manipulation and naivety' on their own behalfs. E.g. There was controversy created by Muslims within the UK circulated by media, October 2006, how Muslims find it very 'unfair' and 'restriction of their own lives' to not be able to wear veils (Niquaab), which disguise the face completely apart from the eye's, to work institutions, schools, employment etc. Jack Straw had mixed views about the 'Niquaab' and prefered talking to women not wearing these. Muslim women wearing 'Niqaabs', should only wear them in Saudi Arabia, where it originated from. Posted by Soph

Dear All,
It is a contract between two parties, and in some cultures recognized under the religious rites and rituals. If a merrage is contact within the parametres of some religion, then off course , divorce had to be through pronciples laid down by that religion. Taking the exemple of a Civil Merriage, contcated between two in some country, irrespective of faith, the law of law would certainly prevail. Regrads Posted by HIPPO LAZY

It would need 2 documents instead of 1 as certain laws are linked to wether people are married or not, If people are married in a muslim ritual for it to be regognised they would have to obtain a marriage certificate, in christian weddings this is signed at the church, otherwise its from the registry office where births & deaths are also registered.
As for other laws they all have to be passed seperatly by the government Posted by felicity foxtrot
