Topic: The 27 Proposals for Reforming Islam
In his book Manifesto For An Enlightened Islam, Malec Chebel states that he believes Islam, as it is perceived and practiced by fundamentalists today, must be reformed. These are the reforms necessary to make Islam compatible to modern day civilization:

)A New Interpretation of the Koran

)The Preeminence of Reason over ALL forms of thought and beliefs (this will certainly be a hurdle for Muslims).

)Society must be managed by Politics not religion (another hurdle for Islam)

)Investing in man (fighting discrimination based on race, ignorance, and gender); (this will surely be a high hurdle)

)The preeminence of the Individual over the Community

)Freedom of thought and conscience must become a Muslim virtue (more hurdling)

)Respect for others including religions, philosophies, gender, race, non-Muslims, etc. (almost insurmountable hurdle)

)Declaring Jihad useless and obsolete (fell on the first hurdle)

)Abolishing all fatwas caling for death

)Promoting the status of women (another major hurdle)

)Abolishing corporal punishment (tripped over another hurdle)

)banning genital mutilation

)punishment for honor killings (another hurdle)

)Modernizing the Civil Law and Personal Code to promote peace and tolerance (tripped and hurt knee on this hurdle)

)An independent Judiciary (tripped on this hurdle as well, my knee hurts!)

)Free access to information including music and art

)Fighting the phenomenon of political assassination in an effort to promote democracy (tripped on this hurdle, ouch!)

)Eliminating the Cult of Personality in the Islamic world

)Firm sanctions against corruption (man, these hurdles.....)

)Investing in the field of world administration (which goes directly against the commands of Mohammed in the Koran)...(argh! dangit! These hurdles!)

)Banning of slavery and all other trafficking in human beings (going against a direct command of Mohammed)....(cough! cough! What?! No more sl...! )

)Promoting a work ethic

)Ending usury (As a result of exploitation of their people. Muslim leaders realize huge gains by usury). (These hurdles man, I swear)

)An active policy regarding new technology (Islamic countries invest the LEAST in education; in case you were wondering why Muslims are not that intelligent...now you know). (hurdles......)

)Defining a clear Bioethics policy

)protecting the environment

)promoting play and recreation for children (sending them to jihad camps is not recreation). (I can't make this last hurdle...I quit)

This is a huge start for Muslims. But as we have seen from the Muslims in Hi5, this is a totally uphill battle for them. I personally say "Fat chance!" Cows will evolve wings before we see these go into effect!
