About Me

About VENOM (SMOKENWORD ARTIST)

I'm African American with a hint of Indian. If you see my grandma and moms...you'll MOS DEF understand. I am ONE woman with ONE word ONE way...I don't run with no click or hang with no b!tches cus I do too much dirt to be hanging with snitches...you underdig? I hail from the same hometown as HBO DEF POET Dana Gilmore. I now reside in ATL which is home to many DEF POETs.

I've shared the stage with Abyss, Maliik Salaam, Bonnie, Tommy Bottoms, Amir, Sister Queen, John Goode, Jessica Care More, & Toni Award Winner G.A. ME. I've also shared the stage with BET Comicview Comedian FOODSTAMP, Griffy 2K (107.9fm DJ/Yung Joc's video), Benard (T.I.'s "24" video), D.R.E.S the Beatnik (from KRS1's video/ BEEF). I opened up for BET Comicview Comedian Kenny Howell in Kansas City, MO 01/06, I appeared on a commercial for The U Church (in KC, MO), 09/30/06 I opened for Kameron Corvette, I had an article written about me in the Kansas City Star & Times 06/02, I have a poem published in an anthology book titled "Beyond the Gardens Gate".

I've been blessed by some of the best; including Tupac Shakur's sister (Yes, the REAL Tupac Shakur's sister bigged me up), and when you hear that you're THE SHIT from a sibling of one of the BEST poets that ever lived...you BELIEVE that shit!!! I've emerged from up under the shadows of many well known poets to ultimately make a name for myself..."VENOM". For those who know me well...they will tell you that I am more than just a poet. I am a Spokenword Artist, Lyricist, Verse-ologist, Motivational Speaker, Writer, Mentor, and most shockingly...A Prophet. Aside of the lyrical poems you may hear me spit at your local night club or bar, I can also spit a verse in church that will make YO momma wanna curse.

I have been known to consistently switch up styles, and owe that to having multiple personalities in which I channel well. I AM the Dr. Jeckyl, Ms. Hyde, and the voice from the other side of poetry. Be it, Bernice Brown, Poetic Nece or VENOM...expect the unexpected. Either you LOVE me or you HATE me. There is no in between. For those that hate me...they LOVE to HATE me...so in the same breath, it's all LOVE.

This is major! I hadn't read this before I replied to the other note you sent me. You are a walking testimony, and you're truly blessed. You are very articulate and yes, you ARE female empowerment. I love that you think outside the paradigm... if I didn't believe you did, I wouldn't have even responded to your invitation. My gift is spiritual too and I felt a different spirit in you than what can be seen by your appearance. Like I said in the other message, my intent is not judgment. I'm but a filty rag...no room to look down upon anyone. The words you speak are true, and they are deep. I like the level of knowledge you possess, the resilience of your spirit to have survived everything that you have. You are wonderfully and beautifully made. I want to hear you perform...I WILL hear you perform. When, I don't know. Where, it hasn't been revealed yet. But, I will be on the lookout for you. Don't stop communicating with me....I like the depth of your philosophies. Continue to testify/prophesy through spoken word. It's what you were created for. You have a story that people need to hear. I was blessed by this testimony...it sent chills up my spine. God makes no mistakes... you have been placed here with and for purpose. I like you, Venom! And, I know you wouldn't change if I didn't, but I just want you to know that I can dig it. You being you is most admired. That's how it is supposed to be. I'm the same way...I don't do nightclubs. It was a long time that I spent in those venues and it wasn't for the word... I had ulterior motives. I have a different lifestyle now, and I like it just the way it is. So, no offense to you or anyone else that finds themselves in that venue. It doesn't display your true self. It doesn't define your character. It's just not something I choose to do. But, I want to continue hearing from you. I hope to see you in another venue soon. Keep me posted on your up and coming events. Be blessed.

Thanks Venom. I have received another invitation via Blackplanet to one of your functions. I absolutely love spoken word/poetry/inspirational speaking, and would love to attend this event. Here's my thing: I'm a Christian, and so the Bible says, "Don't let your good be evil-spoken of." Although I would want to be there just to hear the words/raps, etc., don't you know if another Christian was on Prospect and saw me there, what they would think?!?! And, although appearance isn't everything, it IS something. So, listen, on Good Friday, our church always has a service, and I'm the leader of Spoken Word / Poetry Ministry at my church, therefore, leaders are expected to attend services. So, I'll probably be at church. But don't give up on me....keep me posted on your venues, and you just might see me around. Also, when our Open Mic nights start back up at the church, you will definitely be hearing from me. We have certain rules, of course, because it's the church, but we would love to have you. And you don't strike me as someone that doesn't know how to come to church....I almost bet you were born/raised in one. Be blessed - until next time.
